Your brakes and your Lane Keep Assist system have something they need to let you know. First off understand that there is Lane Departure Warning systems and Lane Keep Assist systems. Lane Departure Warning systems simply alert you that you’re not being a very good driver and can take the form of warning lights and sounds or even vibrating steering wheels and seats. Lane Keep Assist systems take it to the next level by trying to correct the direction of the vehicle and mainly uses brakes, and in some newer vehicles uses steering systems. It is the most prevalent braking method that we address here.
Lane Keep Assist Systems That Use Brakes
The Lane Keep Assist systems that utilize brakes to nudge your car back into the correct position simply apply brake pressure on one wheel, or the other depending on the direction of the nudge needed. What is important to understand is most systems only apply that pressure using the inside brake pads. This gives a subtle adjustment, or nudge but provides what is needed to keep you safely in your lane. This means a visual inspection of your brakes just won’t cut anymore. You or your mechanic used to be able to look at that outside pad and have a pretty good idea of the wear on both pads.
Keep an Eye on The Inside
With Lane Keep Assist vehicles it is necessary to take those brake pads of for a complete inspection. And what you will typically find is that inside pad wearing at entirely different rate as the outside. See the photo of brake pads taken off a 2014 Volvo S60 recently in the Fifth Gear Automotive Shop and note the difference in the amount of brake pad left on the outside pad compared to the inside pad.
Therefore, it is important for you to have your brakes checked by a Certified Mechanic regularly to insure those inside pads are not compromising the entire brake system and your safety.
