Recent years have seen a change in replacing Crankcase Valves (CCV), or PCV valves as they are sometimes called, on the 3.6 Liter V6 (W6) typically found in Porsche, Audi and VW’s. What was once a quick change of a part that cost 10’s of dollars has morphed into 100’s of dollars due to the integration of the CCV valves into the valve cover. Fifth Gear Automotive technician Tim Edwards recently cut away the casing on a 3.6L crankcase to show the incorporated valve and the tears that required the replacement of the entire valve cover on a recent VW in the Fifth Gear Automotive shop.
What purpose does this valve serve? The CCV valve is part of Closed Crankcase Ventilation system, and provides a one way passage for gases that build up in your engine to safely escape. This escape provide two very positive benefits; first, those gases are allowed to get out of your engine rather than causing some of the problems listed below and second, it reduces exhaust emission and that’s good for the environment.
How do you know if your CCV has failed? Symptoms include:
- Increased internal engine pressure
- Failure of one, or more, of the oil seals or gaskets
- Engine oil leaks
- Moisture and sludge buildup inside the engine
- Engine can surge
- Hard Starts
- Rough idle
- Possibly produce white smoke
- Check Engine Light
