Why You Should Read This?
Living in North Texas and driving a Land Rover means the heat can be pushing on the engine cooling unit. Letting a small coolant leak go unchecked can lead to a blown head gasket, among other terrible consequences. This is why at Fifth Gear Automotive Repair; we want to help you detect the problem in the early stages and save you money.
Why Some Land Rove Models Leak Coolant More Than Others
Land Rover coolant cross over pipes malfunctioning is a classic problem. Most SCV6 and SCV8 engines develop a coolant crossover pipe leak which is a problematic area. These kinds of cross pipe and complicated cooling systems along with aging, make land Rover especially vulnerable.
Other Common Leak Sources Include:
- Loose hose connections
- Radiator or reservoir issues
- Succeeded water pump or radiator parts
- Failing water pump or radiator components
Coolant Leak Symptoms Include:
- Sweet, syrupy odor or steam from under the hood
- Low coolant warning light or consistent engine temperature surges
- Vehicle overheating while driving in the city or on hot days
- Noticeable engine coolant puddles – often pink, orange, or green (though sometimes hard to spot, since skid plates can catch and hid much of the leak)
- Heater not blowing warm air even when needed
These signs can quickly escalate to engine damage if ignored.
Why Acting Fast Pays Off
Ignoring a coolant leak can cause:
- Engine overheating – head gasket failure
- $3,000 – $5,000+ damage due to warped cylinders – Repairpal
- Dangerous breakdowns on local roads

Real-World Case Study: 2022 Land Rover Sport HSE Coolant Leak
One of our recent customers brought in their 2022 Land Rover Sport HSE Silver Edition after noticing a sweet smell coming from under the hood and a low coolant warning light. Our expert technician, Nick Gerleman, inspected the vehicle to determine the cause.
The customer had just purchased the Land Rover and, unfortunately, experienced a coolant hose failure while driving. After the coolant hose blew off, the low coolant light appeared, but the vehicle was driven further until the overheat lamp lit up–and eventually the engine shut down completely.
Inspection revealed that the coolant leak originated at the turbo lines, where coolant was leaking off the turbocharger. While our team replaced the failed LR Coolant Expansion Tank Hoses, extensive overheating had already caused engine damage, ultimately requiring a full motor replacement.

This case is a powerful reminder of why it’s critical not to ignore coolant warnings. Acting quickly can mean the difference between a straightforward hose replacement and a complete engine overhaul costing thousands of dollars.
