The right answer is before it gets cold, but if winter has snuck up on you there is still time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the cold. Go ahead and check those coolant levels to insure you have proper amount of anti-freeze to insure you vehicle’s engine won’t freeze, and don’t forget to check those hoses for leaks or wear. If you have concerns, or if getting under the hood just isn’t your thing, then stop by and see us at Fifth Gear Automotive. That is our thing, and we inspect every vehicle that comes in our shop and can address your concerns and make sure you are ready to take on the cold baby!

No matter your preference, here is a quick check list to get you up to speed with winterizing your car:

  • Check Your Antifreeze

This fluid keeps your vehicle from overheating in the summer and freezing up in the winter. Make sure the level is full and the mixture is tested to insure it performs the job it is designed for. And don’t forget to check those hoses for leaks or wear.

  • Inspect Your Tires

Winter is the time your tires will be tested. Make sure you have the necessary tread and stay on top of your pressure. The cold weather and temperature variations can cause you to lose pressure in one or all tires, causing handling and wear issues.

  • Check Your Windshield Washer Fluid Level and Applicator

This is normally a lesson we only need to learn once the hard way, but always insure your washer fluid is full and give a test squirt to insure you haven’t developed a clog or blockage that can affect the applicator. Also, always use designated washer fluid, anything else could freeze.

  • Replace Your Wiper Blades

Your winter routine should include replacing your wiper blades. This will have you ready for the moisture you will no doubt see over the winter and will also give you a leg up on those spring showers that will be right around the corner.

Now that you are ready for the winter don’t forget those general maintenance functions for your vehicle. Check all your fluids; inspect your brakes, hoses, battery, and wiring.
