In the simplest of terms, the job of the transmission is to change the speed ratio between the engine and the wheels of an automobile. Without a transmission, cars would only have one gear – the gear that would allow the car to travel at the desired top speed. It uses a range of gears, from low to high, to make more effective use of the engine’s torque as driving conditions change. The gears can be engaged manually or automatically. You can envision the purpose of a transmission easily with a bike. It is much harder to climb a hill in a high gear, and it is not effective to start moving in a low gear. Transmissions adapt the output of the internal combustion engine in a vehicle to the drive wheels. When the transmission reduces the higher engine speed to the slower wheel speed, the torque is increased.
